### Throughput

> ℹ️ **Throughput is the number of work items finished in per time unit (day/week/month).**

The Throughput Run chart, shows you your throughput over time.

### Uses

- **Tracking performance trends over time** - making it easy to spot patterns, variations, or significant changes in your delivery rate.
- **Assessing process stability** - helps you determine how consistent and predictable your team's pace is, which is crucial for making accurate forecasts.
- **Investigating workflow impacts **- see if changes in your team's active workload are positively or negatively affecting how much work actually gets done.

> ℹ️ **Why Throughput data is important**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ Throughput data is essential because it replaces subjective guesswork with concrete historical evidence of your team's true capacity and actual delivery rate.
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ Because throughput provides a realistic and factual picture of your past delivery rate, it serves as the **perfect foundation to predict the future. **
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ For that reason, your historical throughput data is what we use to power the **Monte Carlo simulations**, allowing you to probabilistically forecast when a larger group of items will be finished or how much work you can complete by a given date.

### Reading the Chart

**Each data point** represents the number of work items finished per time unit (day/week/month).
The placement of the data point tells you two things:

1. The **date**. (horizontal axis)
2. The **number of items completed.** (vertical axis)

![Screenshot 2026-06-08 at 16.53.21.png](media://e28e46d0-49ff-4824-816e-c4877891465c)

**How throughput is calculated**
Normally, throughput is the number of items completed per calendar day.

However, you have the options to adjust two things:

1. The **time unit**: choose from day, week or month
2. When in your **workflow** an item is regarded as completed

These can be adjusted in the chart controls (right side panel). Read more under Chart Controls below.

> ℹ️ **Weekends are included in throughput **because we catch everything using straight calendar days, no matter the specific settings you have in either Jira or Azure. This approach is used to make sure that nothing is forgotten.
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ It's especially important for modern organizations, i.e., when teams are working across **different time zones**, observing **different regional holidays**, or **traveling**, as attempting to filter out certain days could accidentally hide work that actually got completed.

**Getting more info on dots and work items**
You can hover over any data point to see the Date and the Throughput.

You can click on the dot to see a list of the finished work items and more information on the individual items. Clicking anywhere else on the chart makes the information go away.

### Throughput Chart Controls

The Chart Controls are found in the right side panel, under "**Chart controls**".

>
> This insight allows you to get some key stats about the completed work visualized in the chart.
>
> - The **total number of items completed** **in the period** (and how long the period is).
> - The **average (mean) and median number of items completed per time unit** (daily/weekly/monthly per your selection).
> - The **complete range of values** (lowest to highest throughput) shown for the period.

>
> This insight helps you check how steady your delivery is over time.
>
> - **Days above median throughput** shows how often you meet or beat your usual pace on days when your output is higher than the average.
> - Look for days with no work on normal weekdays and check weekend activity using **weekdays with no throughput** and **weekend days with throughput**. These help spot missed work during the week and unexpected work on weekends.
> - The **longest delivery gap** shows the longest time without any delivery, giving you a clue about possible breaks in work.

> This insight allows you to take a closer look at your **top work item** types during your selected time period by viewing both the **count** and the **percentage** linked to each type.
>
> This little analysis will give you some great insights into how you're distributing your efforts, helping you see where your focus lies. Plus! by keeping an eye on these metrics, you can spot any shifts or changes in your priorities over time, which is super helpful for making informed decisions about resource allocation and prioritisation in your projects.

> By default, the chart shows your throughput for each day. However, if you'd like it to calculate by week or month, choose from these alternative options, under the Time Unit control in the right side panel.
>
> The result will be one data point per day, week or month, depending on what you choose. It will then display your daily, weekly or monthly throughput, accordingly.
