It’s tailored to provide users with the knowledge of their *past* work, *present* standing and *future* prospects to aid them in making the most informed, impactful decisions. ### The Dashboard Chart The **Dashboard Chart** is our default chart by design. When you're aiming for a smooth delivery, the key to success is making smart decisions at the top - which is why we’ve designed this chart to bring together the four pillars of [flow metrics](https://www.55degrees.se/blog/post/what-are-flow-metrics) in the form of **Flow Insights**. They do this by distilling information from our pre-built charts and highlighting the most important metrics for users to digest. > ℹ️ As with all our charts, the data that you see depends on the options you chose in the initial data set creation, as well as the current filters you have active. #### Cycle Time This Flow Insight answers the question “**how long** did it take to complete **past work** items?” using the Done Percentiles from the Cycle Time Scatterplot. This information is key to managing stakeholder expectations with data. Cycle Time is calculated in the app as `(finish date - start date) + 1` - the start and finish are designated by how you’ve configured your Workflow Stage Control. --- #### Monte Carlo: How Many This Flow Insight shows you **how many** work items can be **finished** in the **next 30 days** using four different certainties. If you were to forecast for the next 30 days using the Monte Carlo: How Many, you will get a similar forecast - not exactly the same, as the simulations have native randomness 🎲. --- #### Work in Progress (WIP) This Flow Insight lets you know **how many items** in your workflow are** active today**. This metric is taken directly from the current day on the WIP Run Chart. > ℹ️ High WIP is the nemesis of predictability; it inflates cycle times and conceals inefficiencies. To help users monitor WIP, we created the Ideal WIP control under All Charts to show whether your WIP stays within your custom limits. Work items are considered active when they are in any Workflow Stage designated as [in progress] in the Workflow Stage control. --- #### Pace: Start vs Finish This Flow Insight tells you the **monthly rate** at which your work is **arriving** 🛬 and **departing **🛫 in your workflow. So - just like Cycle Time - the **start** is the first [in progress] Workflow Stage and the **finish** is the first [Finished] Workflow Stage. Ideally, your arrival and departure rates are similar. If the arrival rate is higher, you end up starting more tasks than you finish, which makes the WIP age and stale - this widget gives you a quick way to check how healthy your process is. ![Screenshot 2026-05-20 at 14.03.21.png](media://844fb5eb-629e-4de5-9a70-12ed94af6734) - **Start** is the *cumulative* amount of work items that have passed into your first checked Workflow Stage in a specific month. - **Completed** is the *cumulative* amount of work items that have passed into your last checked Workflow sStage in a specific month. > ℹ️ Seeing double? If you want to see your Started or Completed work pace more clearly, you can toggle either off at the top of the chart. This is also possible with the WIP Age Insight. > ℹ️ To get the **average arrival rate and average throughput of the data through to today**, you can go to Summary Statistics on the CFD and grab the information from the system line there. --- #### Work in Progress (WIP) Age This Flow Insight gives you the **daily** **Total Age**, **Average Age** and **WIP level**. This line chart shows any changes or trends over time - the last point on this chart should reflect today. Work items are considered active when they are in any Workflow Stage designated as [in progress]. ![Screenshot 2026-05-20 at 14.56.50.png](media://b7af984b-86b7-496b-b82a-e97df7ce4446) > ℹ️ These metrics are actually a lot more useful than an average of your whole data set, as it gives you a much clearer picture of your changes in risk over time. > ℹ️ **Are we there yet? **Before trusting any metric, you **must** define your workflows beginning and end. > ℹ️ > ℹ️ Just as the [height of a mountain](https://www.55degrees.se/blog/post/what-s-the-tallest-mountain-on-earth) changes depending on whether you measure from sea-level or the earth's core, your metrics are *meaningless* without an internally agreed-upon **Start** (Commitment Point) and **Finish** (Customer Value Delivery). > ℹ️ > ℹ️ Predictability *only* begins when the boundaries of the system are clearly defined - and you can do this by using the **Dashboard Controls**. ### The Controls The Dashboard Chart does *not* have controls that are unique to it, so we’ll be covering the basics. These dates will remain the same, hence the *static*. > - For a **Rolling Period**, pick one of the pre-made options to the right of the Visible Period’s calendar. Unchecking from the top down creates a later start, unchecking from the bottom up makes an earlier finish.
