Before forecasting work items, one big question to ask is: “Is this item ready to be forecasted?”. Portfolio Forecaster runs all simulations based on what it knows. If an item has not yet been refined (i.e., a majority of the children created), it might be best not to include it in the forecast. A quick way to do so is by adding a field on your items, such as “ready to forecast” > Yes/No, and making sure to exclude items with “No”. We use this technique internally, which helps focus on the right conversations. If it’s not ready to be forecasted, then we should not spend much time on it and should focus on the work in progress, or that is ready to be forecasted.

The scenarios within the page are different scenarios that might be played out on the scenario planner to determine the best way to achieve the best outcome for the situation.

- **Scenario 1: Why not start something new? **What might be the impact of introducing new work to my overall work? What might be the impact of introducing new
- **Scenario 2: What about changing priorities?:** What might be the impact of introducing a new priority to my current work? What might be the impact of introducing new

## Scenario 1: Why not start something new?

Sometimes, you need to understand the **impact of introducing new work**, especially when it hasn’t started yet. Whether it’s a new initiative, customer request, or leadership directive, you can simulate the potential impact on your entire delivery system.

## Scenario 2: What about changing priorities?

**With this scenario, you can reorder the epics, try different combinations while respecting the new priority. See what potential outcome is the most realistic and acceptable for each stakeholders.**

> ℹ️ These scenarios enable us to identify potential impacts and understand the relationship between a single change and its broader effects on the entire project, so we can be aware of the risks before committing.

> ⚠️ The priority or order within the work in progress does not matter for Portfolio Forecaster; it always randomly simulate work being completed between the items in progress OR based on the WIP selected in the scenario planning mode.
